About Voices of California: Voices of California (VoCal) is a premier men's a cappella chorus based in the Sacramento Valley of California. With a repertoire focused primarily on music in the barbershop style, VoCal is committed to excellence in performance, community engagement, and the pursuit of musical education. Our artists, ranging from amateur singers to seasoned performers, share a passion for creating harmonious experiences that resonate with audiences across the state and beyond.

Role Summary: The Musical Director is the artistic and educational leader of VoCal, responsible for overseeing all musical aspects of the chorus. This includes directing regular rehearsals, selecting repertoire and choosing between arrangements, preparing the chorus for performances and competitions, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and productive rehearsal environment. The Musical Director will work closely with the chorus leadership to ensure the organization's artistic and educational objectives are achieved.

Organizational Governance: The Musical Director serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors as a 1099 Contractor, but works primarily through the auspices of the Music Team in conjunction with the VP of Music and within the budget of that organizational unit.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead weekly rehearsals, ensuring efficient use of time and fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and musical growth.
  • Select an interesting, diverse and challenging repertoire that aligns with VoCal's mission and showcases the talents of its members.
  • Prepare and conduct the chorus for a variety of performances, including concerts, competitions, and community events.
  • Develop and implement vocal and musical education initiatives for members of all skill levels.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and committees to set artistic goals, plan performance seasons, and engage in strategic planning.
  • Represent VoCal in the community, building relationships with other musical organizations, educators, and the public to enhance the chorus's visibility and impact and advance our mission.
  • Foster a strong, positive, joyful and accountable culture that attracts and retains quality singers.

Mandatory Qualifications:
  • Proven experience as a choral director, music educator, or similar role, with a track record of artistic excellence and leadership.
  • Strong conducting skills and deep knowledge of vocal technique, repertoire, and performance methods.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate singers of varying musical backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Proven organizational skills, with the ability to plan and execute rehearsals at a consistently high level commensurate with our Vision.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the chorus's operations and programming.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, to hold accountable and to connect individually with each performer such that they know they are seen, heard and valued.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Music or a related field is preferred, but significant professional experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to arrange music for a cappella and familiarity with a wide range of musical styles.
  • Significant exposure and familiarity with the Barbershop style.
